Start near Vale of Wrath / Under the Bridge by inspecting the Wanted Notice.

Follow the painter’s basement route, leave to the right, and use the two Grapple points to reach the guard. Obtain the Beekeeper Key.

Use the key at the hut and read the diary to advance the investigation. Nearby loot is not automatically a quest reward.

Inspect the square beehive by the farther hut. Keep the square hives distinct from other scenery.

Find the hive by the body along the road before the wall.

At the first house in town, look behind the hut on the right and inspect the leftmost of the three hives. Complete the required hive interactions.

Valor Mortis The Deserter: quest versus nearby loot

The documented Valor Mortis The Deserter rewards are Bountiful Harvest and Hand in a Jar. Perfectionism is a separate nearby hut pickup, so finding it is not proof that the Deserter quest is complete.
